Bigger. Faster. Stronger. No matter what metric you use, the Razorbacks have drastically improved their defensive line coming into this season.
Coach Sam Pittman would be the first to tell you they needed to shake things up at that position and they certainly have, beginning with three senior transfers. Mix that with the holdovers from last season and you've got a unit that is going to drastically improve from being among the bottom-three when it comes to stopping the run and sacking the quarterback.
The defensive linemen are the star of the show and we've got all the highlights, observations, and videos from Day 16 of fall camp. Let's get to it...
▶️ Go For A Drive: The biggest transfer that the Hogs saw this offseason is John Ridgeway will anchor the middle of the defensive line at 6' 6" and 320 pounds. And it's all because of a hunch and a leisurely drive across state lines: “It was a dead period so I couldn’t go on any [official] visits like that, but I kind of just had my top three teams I was looking at, and Arkansas was only an eight-hour drive. So I took the drive and I loved the atmosphere, went around campus and took my girlfriend and the dog to see everything. The parents loved it. I loved it. So I said, 'Why not? Why not go to Arkansas?'"
▶️ Paired Up: Former Missouri players Markell Utsey and Tre Williams didn't enter the transfer portal with the idea they'd both go to the same school together. But after talking about the process, and floating the idea of reuniting with their old coach (and now Hogs defensive coordinator) Barry Odom, it seemed like a no-brainer: "After I hit the portal, I talked to him,” said Utsey, who is from Little Rock. “I had heard he hit the portal, but I didn’t know how true it was, so I called him because I figured if he did, we were going through kind of the same thing."
Arkansas returns to the practice field tomorrow in the lead up to their season opener against Rice on Saturday, September 4th at 1:00pm.
