STATE OF AFFAIRS
History will be made tonight at Baum-Walker Stadium. Arkansas and Arkansas State will meet on a baseball field for the first time when scheduled starter and freshman phenom Jaxon Wiggins toes the rubber.
This is a Razorback baseball team that hasn't dropped a conference series all season but hasn’t played a midweek game in nearly a month. Add in the historic twist and we’ve got a big nit at Baum-Walker planned.
What will we be looking for tonight when Arkansas State comes to Baum-Walker?
1️⃣ Red Alert: The Red Wolves are coming into Fayetteville with a 16-24 record, but this is a completely different team now than it was when it started the season with a seven-game losing streak. Case in point: They dropped their season opener against Ole Miss by a score of 12-1. Blowout city, right? They played at Ole Miss last week and lost a 15-12 slugfest that included an eight-run inning. The most important thing the Razorbacks can do tonight is to keep from overlooking Arkansas State.
2️⃣ High Score: There are three Red Wolves starters who are batting over .300 on the season—Liam Hicks (.398), Ben Klutts (.323), and Tyler Duncan (.317). The team is batting .270 and has scored an average of 6.3 runs per game. Compare that to the Razorbacks who are hitting .280 as a team and scoring 7.9 runs per game. Arkansas State are no slouches when it comes to offense.
3️⃣ Pitch Imperfect: Where this game will be won is when the Razorbacks are up to bat. Arkansas State pitchers have a combined 7.29 ERA with nearly as many walks (5.7) as strikeouts (6.4) per game. This will be a great opportunity for head coach Dave Van Horn to give his batters an opportunity to find a rhythm before an incredibly important matchup at Tennessee (who leads the SEC East) this weekend.
Arkansas will be hosting in-state rival Arkansas State tonight at 6:30pm CT. You can watch the game on SEC Network+.
