BATTLE FOR THE GOLDEN BOOT

2015. That's the last time Arkansas beat LSU. Is this the year the Golden Boot makes its return to Fayetteville?

Last year's matchup was as close as it's been over the past five seasons, with the Tigers needing until the final minutes to score the game-winning touchdown.

Here are three things you need to know about LSU... and how the Hogs can win a pivotal game against its SEC West rivals:

▶️ Quarterback Carousel: LSU had to replace 16 starters last season, including quarterback Joe Burrow. Head coach Ed Orgeron had Myles Brennan waiting in the wings, but he suffered an abdominal injury three weeks into the season, leaving a pair of freshmen in TJ Finley and Max Johnson to split starts. All signs should have pointed to Brennan getting his job back as soon as spring football started, but Orgeron has said this is an open competition. If one quarterback starts (and struggles) early, it could mean that the other is playing catch up by the time Arkansas comes to town.

▶️ Pick Your Battles: LSU had the worst pass defense in college football last season, giving up 323.0 yards per game through the air. But despite the Tigers giving up so many yards, Coach Sam Pittman & Co. would be smart to target specific LSU defenders in the passing game, rather than think they can throw it at will against them. After all, the Tigers have two All-Americans at cornerback.

▶️ Stay Grounded: Usually, LSU is rich in wide receivers. Justin Jefferson... Ja'Marr Chase... Terrance Marshall. But the leading receiver this year is Kayshon Boutte, who finished last year with 735 yards and five touchdowns. Not bad, right? His final game against Ole Miss (where he racked up 308 of those yards and three touchdowns) greatly exaggerated how good he was last season. The Tigers will likely want to run the ball. Don't let them.

SEC Media Days is scheduled to start on Monday, July 19th. Leading up to the event, we'll be breaking down all 12 of the team's opponents in 2021. Up tomorrow? Alabama!
